Do you remember the movie ‘The Notebook’? The movie that guaranteed to leave viewers in tears?

Well I can confirm that ‘In Waves’, by AJ Dungo, is the graphic novel equivalent. Actually, on second thought, ‘In Waves’ is superior because it is authentic and represents real life.

‘In Waves’ is a story of love, loss and surfing. It explores the author’s personal history of surfing as well as educating us about the history of surfing as a sport and lifestyle. At the same time, it introduces the reader to the personal story of the author and his now deceased partner and their struggle with cancer.

Not only is the story beautiful, but so is the art work. Indeed, some pages have very little text, as great graphic novels often do. Sometimes the art says it all. 

But don’t just take my word for it. ‘In Waves’ has won many awards and critical acclaim from an international audience.
